Application of Zirconia Ceramics in Biomedicine

Zirconia ceramics, as a high-performance biologically inert material, have been widely used in orthopedics, oral implantation, and restoration due to their excellent mechanical strength, outstanding biocompatibility, and aesthetic effects similar to natural teeth.

Product Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What problems can zirconia ceramics solve for traditional metal implants?
If you are facing aesthetic concerns such as metal ion allergies, MRI interference, or gum discoloration, zirconia ceramics are an ideal alternative. Its tooth like color can perfectly solve the aesthetic problem of repairing the front teeth area, while completely avoiding metal allergy reactions.

  1. Compared to titanium alloys, what is the long-term stability of zirconia ceramics after implantation?
Zirconia ceramics have a bending strength of up to 1200MPa and excellent corrosion resistance, but their elastic modulus (about 210GPa) is higher than that of human bone tissue. We can effectively promote bone tissue growth and ensure the long-term stability of implants through porous surface design and nano coating modification technology.
How can zirconia ceramics solve the core problem of implant infection?
Although zirconia itself does not possess antibacterial properties, we significantly enhance its antibacterial performance through surface modification techniques such as silver nanoparticle coating, zinc oxide modification, or alkaline magnesium oxide film treatment, effectively inhibiting bacterial colonization and reducing the incidence of peri implantitis.
What customized services can you provide?
Based on our rich experience in quartz product processing, we support full-size customization of dental implants, orthopedic hip joints, and customized dental restorations. By adopting 3D printing additive manufacturing technology, integrated molding of complex geometric structures can be achieved, with layer thickness accuracy up to 10 microns or less.

Core advantages and applications of the product

Product advantages
Mechanical strength: Bending strength of 500-1200MPa (depending on crystal phase type), able to withstand 400-600N chewing force in the posterior tooth area, meeting the repair needs of load-bearing areas
Aesthetic performance: Light transmittance of 40% -50%, close to 55% -60% of natural enamel, no metallic translucency in the restoration of the anterior teeth area, natural and beautiful
Biocompatibility: No release of metal ions, no allergic reactions, suitable for patients with metal allergy constitution
Antibacterial modification: Silver/zinc/magnesium oxide coating technology, contact sterilization mechanism, reduces the risk of peri implantitis (incidence rate 21.6% can be optimized to lower)
Customization accuracy: 3D printing layer thickness ≤ 10 μ m, xy axis resolution ≤ 20 μ m, achieving personalized anatomical morphology, excellent edge fit

Classification and selection of zirconia ceramics
Zirconia ceramics are divided into four generations based on the yttrium oxide content:
-3Y-TZP (traditional zirconia): with a strength of over 1000MPa, suitable for multi unit fixed bridges in posterior teeth
-4Y-PSZ (high transparency zirconia): strength 500-800MPa, aesthetic and strength balance
-5Y-TZP (Ultra Transparent Zirconia): Strength 500-600MPa, optimal transparency, suitable for aesthetic areas of anterior teeth

Customer Application Cases
Requirement background:

A well-known European dental implant restoration center (anonymous at the request of the client) encountered challenges while handling implant restoration in the aesthetic area of anterior teeth. The patient is a 35 year old female who is allergic to metals and has extremely high aesthetic requirements due to her profession (as a public figure). Traditional titanium alloy implants may cause gum discoloration, affecting the final aesthetic effect.
Solution:
Our technical team recommends using 5Y-TZP ultra transparent zirconia material and customizing integrated implants and personalized healing abutments for patients through 3D printing additive manufacturing technology. We designed a porous surface structure (pore size 50-200 μ m) to promote osseointegration in response to the patient’s alveolar bone condition. At the same time, alkaline magnesium oxide film surface treatment technology is adopted to enhance antibacterial performance without affecting aesthetics. The thickness of the entire restoration is controlled between 0.8-1.5mm to ensure a balance between translucency and shading effect.
Final effect:
A 3-month postoperative follow-up showed good healing of the soft tissue surrounding the implant, with a pink aesthetic score (PES) reaching the ideal level. The level of inflammatory cytokine IL-1 β in gingival crevicular fluid around the implant was significantly lower than that in the control group of conventional materials, indicating mild soft tissue inflammation response. The indicators related to peri implantitis showed no signs of infection within 6 months after surgery. The patient is very satisfied with the aesthetic effect, and the color of the restoration is consistent with that of the adjacent teeth, without any metal color issues. One year after surgery, CBCT showed good osseointegration and marginal bone resorption of less than 0.5mm, far superior to the industry average (10-year average of 1.61mm).
