Main characteristics
High temperature resistance: Silicon nitride ceramics (Si3N4) have no melting point at normal pressure and decompose directly at around 1870 ℃. They can withstand oxidation up to 1400 ℃ and can be used at temperatures up to 1200 ℃ (mechanical strength will decrease above 1200 ℃). In a protective atmosphere, it is recommended to use temperatures up to 1400 ℃.
Thermal shock resistance: Silicon nitride ceramics have excellent thermal shock resistance and will not crack under thermal shock from room temperature to 1000 ℃. This is due to its small coefficient of thermal expansion (2.8-3.2 × 10-6/℃) and high thermal conductivity.
High hardness and wear resistance: Silicon nitride ceramics have a hardness second only to diamond, cubic boron nitride, boron carbide, and carbon carbon composite materials, and have extremely high wear resistance.
Good chemical stability: Silicon nitride ceramics are not resistant to hydrofluoric acid and concentrated NaOH corrosion, but can withstand corrosion from all inorganic acids, certain alkaline solutions, molten alkalis, and salts. In addition, it can resist the erosion of molten metals such as aluminum, lead, tin, silver, brass, nickel, etc., but can be corroded by molten liquids such as magnesium, nickel chromium alloys, stainless steel, etc.
