The original hue of Alizarin came from the roots of the madder plant, and was used as a dye thousands of years before it was made into a lake pigment and named Alizarin Crimson. The original pigment is not considered lightfast however todays artist grade watercolours are made from permanent and stable synthetic alternatives. Artists
